Henna or mehndi is used for temporary patterns and designs on weddings in South East Asia. The henna tattoos in the East are more like small birds or hearts painted on the shoulders or the arms but the traditional mehndi designs for wedding functions are very different and unique. Other than weddings these designs and patters are adopted by women on various traditional occasions such as Eid. The intricate patterns and designs distinguish Arabic Henna tattooing from other forms of designing.
There is a separate wedding occasion called Mehndi in the South East Asian wedding ceremonies where the close friends and family enjoy songs and dances and the bride’s hand and feet are imprinted with henna designs. The main aim of this activity is to make the bride look pretty for her wedding. The number and type of Arabic henna designs vary from small designs to heavy patterns from fingertips till the forearm.
The good thing about Arabic henna designs is that you can play around with the patterns from swirls and loops, to vine and flower patterns and some simple designs. On the hands the designs can vary from being light and simple to heavy and filling till the forearm. Some brides prefer to have light and simple designs on their feet while others want heavy designs till their ankles. The type of patterns and designs depend upon the bride’s choice and the henna artist’s creativity. On the occasion of the mehndi the friends and family of the bride also adorn their hands with mehndi designs, but they are usually not as detailed or heavy as the bride’s henna designs.
Henna designs are also used by girls on different traditional occasions such as Diwalis, Eids and other traditional occasions. The wedding season and festivities influences all the female friends and family and the little girls to get their hands adorned with different patterns. Girls can choose their designs from a number of different patterns and there are many catalogues and prints available where you can easily choose the designs.
With a bit of practice, the art of henna designing can easily be mastered and people can even create their own designs and the best part about Arabic mehndi designs is that as long as the patterns complement each other, the designs will look good. One safe pattern is where vine designs go with floral design no matter what way you go. Arabic henna designs can be used to add to the beauty of brides.
